Hydronic Screed Underfloor Heating

Hydronic In Screed Floor Heating

Hydronic Screed is installed above the subfloor in a sand cement screed. With the close proximity of Hydronic Screed system to the floor surface, it offers a faster heat up time as compared to in slab heating systems.

Hydronic Screed is the most efficient and responsive hydronic underfloor heating system, and is suited for new constructions and renovations alike.

The hydronic pipes are installed across the floor, above insulation, at 200mm centres and to a maximum circuit length of 100m. The pipes are covered with a minimum 55mm sand cement screed. And suitable floor finishes include tile, stone, carpet, vinyl and floating or glue down timber floors.

When in operation, heated water circulates through hydronic pipes embedded in the screed, heating the screed as it does so. The screed topping in turn releases heat gently and evenly throughout the room and can be used as a primary heat source or as a background comfort heating solution.

A variety of heat sources can be used to heat the water including gas boiler, electric heat pump, solar or wood stove. Due to the thermal mass, off-peak energy sources or solar type energy sources can be used to pre-heat the slab at lower running costs.

Hydronic Screed can be used as a primary heating system, or as an auxiliary heating solution along with other room heating systems.

Application Hydronic Sreed underfloor heating is suitable for large areas (60 m² +), with piping embedded in a minimum 50mm sand & cement
Heat Output From 60W/m²
Insulation From 5mm foil faced foam to 37mm pipe positioning insulation boards
Piping Pipe options with oxygen barrier for underfloor heating applications include 16-20mm PE-RT/Al/PE-RT, PE-RT and PEX
Manifold Stainless steel manifolds complete with flow meters and auto air bleed valves
Control 30W/Lm
Control Programmable room or floor sensing (or a combination of both) control. On/off connection and control is also available through most home automation systems
Heat Source Electric heat pumps, H2 ready gas boilers or hydrid solar pre-heat

Hydronic Screed floor heating pipes are installed on top of a concrete floor (or timber floor with pipe positioning insulation boards), and embedded in a sand cement screed. The recommended minimum sad cement screed topping is 55mm.

Installation of the hydronic piping for in screed heating can be as follows:

  • Where pipes are clipped to a light weight mesh above a concrete slab, and embedded in a minimum 55mm sand cement screed over the concrete slab
  • Where pipe positioning insulation boards of 37mm is used, the pipe is fitted into the insulation panels, and embedded in a minimum 55mm sand cement screed over the 37mm insulation boards
  • Where a flat insulation sheet of minimum thickness 50mm is used, the pipe is clipped directly to the insulation boards, and embedded in a minimum 55mm sand cement screed over the 50mm insulation board

To avoid the loss of adhesion of the screed to the concrete slab, or where adhesion is not possible due to the incorporation of insulation, reinforcement within the screed is required. The reinforcement should be placed centrally in the depth of the screed over the hydronic piping and extend 250 mm to each side of the piping pattern or to the room perimeter.
