How does Electric Floor Heating Work?

Electric Floor HeatingElectric floor heating systems comprise of a resistive heating conductor in the concrete slab, in-screed or in-tile adhesive. It works very similiar to heating blankets we put on our beds. Under floor, the heat radiates into the floor finish which in turn through radiant heat, radiates its warmth out into objects that are colder than it is.

Three different types of installations are available:
  • In-slab - the thermal mass absorbs the heat from the Slab Heat Cable, and then radiates it evenly into the living space. This method has a very slow response time and usually only cost-effective when connected to off-peak or heat tariff power. If the floor’s thermal mass is large enough, the heat stored in it will keep the house comfortable for 6-8 hours.
  • In-screed - the thermal mass is limited to the screed toppping thickness, yet offers a faster response time compared to in-slab applications. Generally, in-screed floor heating systems are connected to heat tarrif or domestic power.
  • In-tile adhesive - arguably the most popular floor heating application and particularly suited to renovation projects as it does not affect floor levels. The in-tile electric floor heating system, like Cable Mat, only has the thermal thermal mass of the floor covering but offers the fastest response time compared to all others.
